Philanthropy Resources

The study of philanthropy at Indiana is interdisciplinary and inter-professional.  Mr. Payton argues for an academic core of three elements: the Center on Philanthropy, the Payton Library, and the School of Liberal Arts.

The Joseph and Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library

The Joseph and Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library is housed in the University Library of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). The Philanthropic Studies Library is a unique cross-disciplinary collection, including works of philosophy, religion, history, literature, and medicine as they relate to voluntary giving, voluntary service, and voluntary association. The collection includes audio and video materials, specialized periodicals in the field, and dissertations. Primary source materials in print and microform enhance the value of the collection for research.

The Center on Philanthropy

The Center on Philanthropy was founded as an inter-disciplinary effort to increase the understanding of philanthropy and improve its practice through research, teaching, and public service. The Center is located on the campus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), a major urban institution within the Indiana University system. The Center has academic and research programs on the IUPUI and the IU-Bloomington campuses.

The Philanthropy Manuscript Collections at the University Archives

The Philanthropy Manuscript Collections at the University Archives include the historical records of the following: organizations and individuals that have worked as advocates for the nonprofit sector, fund raising firms that help nonprofit organizations raise money, foundations and individual philanthropists, and nonprofit organizations that provide social services, particularly in central Indiana. These collections also provide a wide scope of research materials dealing with social, historical, political, educational, and ethnic developments and changes in the United States during the twentieth century. In conjunction with the Joseph and Matthew Payton Philanthropic Studies Library, the Philanthropy collections represent a great concentration of materials for intensive study in all realms of philanthropy.

Jane Addams-Andrew Carnegie Fellowship

Jane Addams-Andrew Carnegie Fellowship engages recent college graduates in the multi-dimensional tradition of philanthropy, through intensive study and voluntary service. This comprehensive 10-month fellowship is intended to encourage young people with leadership potential to integrate philanthropy into their careers, whether in government, business, the professions, or in the third sector itself.

The School of Liberal Arts

The School of Liberal Arts. PaytonPapers.org includes a number of essays and lectures on philanthropy and liberal education and the role of philanthropy in the university, all of which try to make the case for grounding the study of the subject in the liberal arts, just as the study of medicine is grounded in the biological sciences. The emphasis on education rather than on training attempts to correct the present imbalance in the field.

Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI)

Indiana University Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) was founded by Indiana University and Purdue University, and has become Indiana's most comprehensive campus. IUPUI offers 180 Indiana University and Purdue University degrees, including the Master of Arts in Philanthropic Studies (through the School of Liberal Arts) and the Master of Public Affairs in Non-Profit Management (through the School of Public and Environmental Affairs), both of which are co-sponsored by the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy.
